Social media was supposed to mirror the real world. Instead, it has quietly become a parallel universe that runs on its own logic, often disconnected from how people actually think, feel, and relate to each other. The paradox is simple: we have never been more “in touch” and rarely felt more misunderstood.

At CO3LAB, we see this not as a moral failure, but as a design failure. When communication systems are optimised for dashboards and algorithms, they inevitably drift away from human reality. They try to build trust, loyalty, and collaboration inside an environment that quietly rewards the opposite: speed over reflection, noise over clarity, performance over honest connection. Organisations that over-rely on social media are effectively building a sandcastle on a windy shore.

What research tells us, and why we cannot ignore it

Research on social media and close relationships already talks about a puzzle of “connection and disconnection”: the same tools that help us stay in touch can also fuel jealousy, distance, and mistrust. Add to that the documented effects of information overload, social overload, and digital fatigue on exhaustion and withdrawal from platforms, and you get a familiar pattern: people start muting, unfollowing, scrolling past, or leaving platforms altogether, not because they do not care, but because their minds are exhausted (Taylor et al., 2022; Fu & Li, 2020; Sweller et al., 2019).

The usual response from organisations is to push harder. More content, more formats, more urgency, more campaigns “for engagement”. But competing in this attention arms race mostly creates digital clutter, not understanding. You may win the momentary click and still lose the long-term relationship.

Is there an alternative?

Cognitive science offers a different starting point: design communication for minds, not feeds. We know that attention is limited, memory is selective, and people only stay with information that feels structured, relevant, and psychologically safe enough to process. We also know that when information is aligned with how people actually process and integrate it, it becomes easier to retain and act on over time (Sweller et al., 2019).

At CO3LAB, our work revolves around helping organisations restructure their communication ecosystems.  This involves designing messages, systems and interfaces that genuinely foster connection rather than merely simulating it.  This might involve removing unnecessary noise redesigning information flow within teams or rebuilding a brand’s voice to make customers feel truly understood rather than targeted. 

We are not rediscovering the moon. This is a rigorous but fresh application of a well-established methodology.

If social media has become a parallel universe, the answer is not to abandon it or worship it. It is to reconnect it to reality: to the way human minds actually work, and to the relationships that still happen offline – in meetings, in conversations, and in the quiet decisions people make when no one is watching. If you want your organisation to be a real influencer in real life, for your customers, partners, and employees, the place to start is not your next post, but the structure of meaning behind it.
